Jill Scott was born on April 4 1972 on the 4th of April 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. The family of Jill Scott consisted of her mother and grandmother. The only child she has. Scott attended an institution called the Philadelphia High School for Girls, and then Temple University after graduating. While working two jobs and studying secondary education, she continued her studies. The hope was to become a English High School teacher. The dream, however was in vain when she left college after three year of study and became an aide to teachers. Her first job was as a spoken word artist performing her own pieces during live poetry readings. She later joined forces with Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by the two. Then, during Roots' show, she revealed herself to be an artist. Later, she secured collaborations artists such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She also gained experience in performing during the Canada Tour of Broadway's musical Rent. She signed as the label's first artist.
